dream girl Four years ago Cherry Petenbrink moved to Los Angeles to break into the movie business. What happened next surprised even her. Dreams can come true. Just ask Cherry Petenbrink, who sold her salon, Shebang, in St. Marys, Georgia, and with husband and daughter in tow, drove a U-Haul clear across the country to nd work in the movie business. Her husband, who had just retired from the military, agreed that after 20 years of following him all over the country, it was her turn. And boy, did she make the most of it. While still living in Georgia, Petenbrink had taken classes at Susan Lipsons On Set Hair Academy in Santa Monica, California, which helped her land a job working on 20 The Colorist | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013 | thecoloristmag.com Cherry Petenbrink received a lm credit for the hair color work she did on Te Hunger Games. a lm starring Tom Berenger. Ten, just two years after arriving in Tinseltown, she got her big break when she was hired to work on Te Hunger Games. Id never worked on a lm that had this much color work, says Petenbrink, who spent a month coloring wigs and extensions and bleaching eyebrows. Tere were 500 extras, all of whom had some color in their hair. Petenbrink also worked with the lms three big stars: Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen), Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Melark) and Liam Hemsworth (Gale Hawthorne), and her name was listed in the lms credits, which was a really big deal because you rarely see a colorist credit in a movie. Since then, Petenbrink has been busy. Shes still doing moviesthe latest is Saving Mr. Banks, a biographical drama about the making of Mary Poppins, which stars Tom Hanks and Emma Tompson. Petenbrink, who was invited to watch the cast re-create the premiere of the iconic lm at Graumans Chinese Teatre in Hollywood, allows that its still a thrill to have actors like Hanks and Tompson approach her to say how glad they are to see her again. It was also exciting to help Nicole Kidman get into character for her latest project, Stoker. Being on a rstname basis with A-list celebrities, however, has not gone to her head. More than anything, Petenbrink loves working behind the chair and sees clients regularly at Salon Republic in West Hollywood. Shes also a Guest Artist and Color Competence Trainer for Joico. Right now its all about balance for Petenbrink, who decided not to join the union because she doesnt want to be on the road and away from her family for three or four months at a time. Instead, she works as a freelance color consultant, assisting in character makeovers on a few lms a year, which is incredibly rewarding and leaves plenty of time to do what she really loves, which is sharing her knowledge of color with hairdressers all over the country. Last year alone she logged in more than 100,000 frequent ier miles (her hands-on classes for Joico are sold-out events). I am so honored to be working with artists like Damien Carney, Sue Pemberton and Beth Minardi, Petenbrink says. I have the life I want. Sounds like a dream come true to us.
