upfront you've gotta have friends Marianne Dougherty ➜ EDITOR IN CHIEF 8 The Colorist | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 Martino Cartier with Alex, who has stage 4 cancer, her mom and Taylor Swift mdougherty@creativeage.com PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MARTINO CARTIER Martino Cartier is a lot of things: a hairdresser, a salon owner, an educator, a TV personality, and the International Artistic Director for Keratin Complex Smoothing Terapy. But what's brought him more pleasure than anything is his charity, Friends Are By Your Side, which benefits women and children with cancer. Since 2011, Cartier has asked hairdressers all over the world to join him in providing wigs at no charge to women and children who've lost their hair to chemotherapy. Ten in 2012, Cartier met Kiki, an 11-year-old girl who had been battling cancer since she was eight but had been turned down for a wig by a number of foundations. Te two became fast friends—Cartier made a wig for her when she told him she wanted to "feel pretty"—but the best was yet to come. Seven months after they met, Cartier was able to make one of Kiki's dreams come true when he scored front-row tickets for a Justin Bieber concert, picked her up in a hot-pink limo and took her backstage to hang out with the performer and have her picture taken with him before watching the show. Since then, dozens of wishes have been granted to children struggling with cancer. Tere have been trips to Disneyland where a little girl named Emma met Cinderella as well as meet-and-greets with stars like Adam Sandler and Taylor Swift. On November 7 Cartier's foundation will host the first "Wigs and Wishes" gala in Berlin, New Jersey, to raise funds to make dreams come true for countless others fighting cancer. Celebrity guests include Tabatha Coffey, Mary Sciarrone (Cake Boss) and the cast of Jerseylicious. Want to get involved? Visit friendsarebyyourside.com and find out how you can help. Cartier suggests holding cut-a-thons or special events to raise money or adding one dollar to every product you sell and earmarking the funds for Friends Are By Your Side. "In everyone's life a little rain must fall," says Cartier. "Be the sunshine for someone today."
