the big picture Her work has appeared in ad campaigns, on television and in numerous fashion and beauty magazines, but Jennifer MacDougall still loves helping other colorists excel. ➺ 20 A native of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, Jennifer MacDougall has been a L'Oréal Professionnel artist since 1997, just two years after she graduated from beauty school. "I had some opportunity to do editorial with them when they launched Maji Contrast in the early 2000s," says MacDougall, who loved the experience so much that she moved to New York City in order to get more work. Let's just say it was a smart move. A sought-after editorial stylist, MacDougall has been published in magazines like US Weekly and Vanity Fair. Her work has also appeared in ad campaigns for Macy's, Neiman Marcus and Cold Water Creek. Project Runway hired her to color each designer's hair, and continuity was important. "Te show films over the summer, but they go back into the studio in the fall," she says. "So if someone had regrowth when the show started filming, you had to put that regrowth back in. If their color was fresh, you had to make sure it looked that way at the end of the season. It was fun." MacDougall has also worked on Real Housewives of New York City ("I glossed LuAnn's hair a couple of times," she allows) and Ice Loves Coco. When not in the studio or on set, MacDougall focuses on education. "One of the things I'm really proud of right now are the L'Oréal Professionnel videos I've done with Jason Backe," she says. "One of my favorite models was a woman whose hair was 100-percent white. I changed it to a gorgeous shade of blonde with dimension in the front. I also took a woman whose hair was dark blonde to a shade of velvety plum. What's so great about these videos is that we're using people who look like actual clients you might see in the salon." Te tutorials are eight to 12 minutes long (visit lpusapro.com) and include "before" and "after" photos as well as the technique that was used to create each look. When it comes to hair color, MacDougall prefers shades that are natural looking and complement the skin tone. "I prefer to do things that are more commercial. Tink of those Victoria's Secret models you see walking the runway," says MacDougall, who also uses color to add volume and make the hair look shinier and healthier. Still, the two-time NAHA Colorist of the Year is not content to rest on her laurels. Recently she took a class at the L'Oréal Professionnel Academy in Manhattan with one of her mentors, balayage expert Nancy Braun. "Balayage is such a huge trend right now, and she's a master." Among MacDougall's long-term goals are to travel "all over" with L'Oréal Professionnel. "But if someone asks me to do a movie or a TV show, I'm open to that, too," she says. Give her time. After all, she's only been in New York for two years. Imagine where she'll be by the end of the decade. Jennifer MacDougall used L'Oréal Professionnel Dia Richesse in Gingerbread and Cinnamon with 15-volume peroxide to achieve this rich shade of red.
