I thought it made a cute story—was I witnessing a future beauty professional soaking up a little education at an early age?—so I took a photo of the two of them and published it. End of story, right? I thought so, too, until I attended the Redken Artist Connection (RAC) in Las Vegas this January and sat across from Judi and a handsome young man at breakfast one morning. I must confess that I didn't recognize Judi at fi rst, but she reminded me of how we'd met 23 years ago. And the handsome young man at her side? Yep, it was Grayson all grown up and a hairdresser just like I'd imagined. In fact, he's part of the family business, a progressive cosmetology school called Z Hair Academy with locations in Lawrence and Overland Park, Kansas, and Lee's Summit, Missouri. Judi and her husband Ron, who have been salon owners, manufacturer educators and professional product distributors, decided to open their fi rst school 10 years ago in order to share their vast knowledge and off er a comprehensive educational experience that allows their graduates to excel in the beauty industry. Students—Judi and Ron think of them as "part of our family"—off er cut, color, manicures and facials in the on-site studios. After catching up at breakfast, I asked someone to take a photo of the four of us, which I'm sharing with you here. Who knows, maybe in another 20 years or so Grayson will be posing with a son or daughter of his own, who has followed in his footsteps. Now that's something I'd like to see.
