As colorists, we all have clients who request "cool" hair color without warmth, red or brassiness. In the past, that meant that we would reach for the ash-based tones and do our best to cancel out the warm, underlying pigment. Today, with advances in technology, we have a lot more options. Still, it's important to understand the concept of underlying pigment and to assess the client's natural tone and level properly. Trust me, there's no shame in pulling out your Natural Level Finder just to be safe. Recently I performed a lightening service inspired by the light beige hues of former dark-haired celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Sofi a Vergara. After assessing my client as a natural level three with a golden skin tone, I decided to "clear" the underlying warmth by lifting the hair to a level 8. T en I applied many, many micro-slice highlights, alternating two formulas— Matrix Light Master + 10 Volume Matrix Cream Developer and Light Master + 20 Volume Matrix Cream Developer. After lifting the hair and removing the highlights, I toned with equal parts Matrix COLORINSIDER Gold Ash 6.31 + 8.31 + 10-volume developer. THE RESULT: a beautiful, balanced tone that brought her complexion to life. NAHA (North American Hairstyling Awards) celebrates 25 years of beauty in Las Vegas this July, an anniversary that prompted this little stroll down memory lane.
