46 The Colorist | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014 | thecoloristmag.com L ast spring Matrix became the fi rst professional beauty brand to pioneer the use of wearable technology when it launched its Google Glass "Class for Glass" initiative. It's a brilliant idea that takes education to a whole new level. Wearing Google Glass, world-class educators are able to off er students a unique perspective when demonstrating cutting, coloring and styling techniques. Nick Stenson, one of those world-class educators who travels so much that he jokes that he lives at 30,000 feet on American Airlines, admits that he's not a geek at heart. Still, he was blown away by Google Glass. "It's creating a diff erent educational experience for hairdressers that's unlike anything we've seen before," he says. T ink about it: Videographers are limited in how much detail they can show onscreen. "A cameraman can only get so close until the body of the artist is in the way," Stenson says. "T ey're basically trying to look over an artist's shoulder, but when the artist is wearing Google Glass, you see everything he sees. It's like looking directly through the artist's eyes." And that, says Stenson, is what's so revolutionary about this technology. "People like the element of detail you can see in the hair when the artist is wearing the Google Glass." As the program gains traction, educators will be using Google Glass at major trade shows. Also in the works: T e opportunity for attendees to don their own wearable technology to record their education experience. T e initial Class for Glass video lineup features a color-and-cut tutorial with Chrystofer Benson, Matrix Artistic Director and 2014 NAHA winner for Hair Color, that's available 24/7 on mymatrixfamily.com. "Nothing like this, with this type of leading edge technology, has ever been done before," says Martin Dale, Matrix Vice President of Education. "For the leading edge educators at Matrix, it's a perfect fi t." We couldn't agree more. Nick Stenson, Artistic Director, Matrix, is a raving fan of the company's groundbreaking Google Glass initiative. poi t of view PHOTOGRAPHY: COURTESY OF MATRIX. through the looking glass Seeing is believing Matrix Artistic Director Nick Stenson uses Google Glass during an Oil Wonders client appointment. T e breakthrough technology off ers an entirely diff erent experience for hairdressers because it allows them to see exactly what the educator is seeing, up close and personal. "It's like looking through the artist's eyes," Stenson says.
