40 The Colorist | MARCH/APRIL 2015 | thecoloristmag.com PHOTOGRAPHY (CLOCKWISER FROM TOP LEFT) :COURTESY OF SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL; COURTESY OF MATRIX; COURTESY OF PRODUCT CLUB; COURTESY OF BURMAX IN THE NICK OF TIME Matrix Artistic Director Nick Stenson shares tips, techniques and celebrity trends. It's not only haircuts and updos that take hold on the red carpet. Innovative hair color designs are often snapped by the paparazzi and instantly, a trend is born. Here's what's on the celebrity radar this spring: 1 | BALAYOMBRÉ Ombré is still spotted on dozens of celebs, but now there's a new twist. A-listers like Jennifer Lopez are coupling those pale ends with more illumination around the face and throughout top sections. To create Balayombré, start by performing your favorite ombré technique to lift the ends, then use a freehand balayage technique to place highlights in the face frame area and off the part. 2 | TORTOISESHELL COLOR Stylish brunette celebrities like Jessica Alba have emerged with a color pattern that evokes the classic palette of tortoiseshell. To get the look, keep the roots fairly dark and work up from the nape, applying your chosen shades in a balayage fashion. I recommend using lightener and permanent hair color formulas on each client in order to produce a variety of shades. For example, if you're working on a natural level 5, you might alternate two formulas—Matrix Light Master plus 20-volume Cream Developer and ColorInsider 8GV (8.32) plus 20-volume ColorInsider Oil-Cream Developer for a balanced, beige-blonde result. Or, swap out the 8GV (8.32) with 8NW (8.03) for a slightly warmer result. 3 | GROUNDED PASTELS It seems like some celebrities, like Kelly Osbourne and Nicole Richie, just can't part with their pale pink and purple hues. T at means they'll continue to be requested by fans in your chair. To make these pastels more modern, try base-shading to "ground" these airy hues at the roots. newsfeed One of Product Club's newest must-have tools for colorists— Disposable Towels Master Color Artist Rossa Jurenas has been named Schwarzkopf Professional's North American Color Director, overseeing the collaboration of education, sales and marketing for the company's color division.
