8 The Colorist | JULY/AUGUST 2015 | thecoloristmag.com road show PHOTOGRAPHY: COURTESY OF KAO SALON US Lotus Abrams EDITOR IN CHIEF labrams@creativeage.com S ince returning to my hometown in the Bay Area in Northern California last fall after living in New York City for more than 12 years, there are defi nitely some things I don't miss—namely, freezing winters, packed subway trains and garbage-strewn sidewalks. As a beauty editor, however, I have to admit that there was always something big going on in the world of beauty in New York—from fashion week to product launch parties to salon events—that helped keep me informed and inspired. T at's why when an invite to attend Goldwell and KMS California's Hair Play the Tour Collective in nearby San Francisco popped into my inbox, I jumped at the chance to attend. T e annual education tour, which visited New York City, Boston, Seattle and San Francisco this year, showcased color and styling trends and techniques by the Goldwell and KMS California Artistic Teams, as well as Nick Arrojo and the Arrojo Studio Team. T e desire to make education accessible to a greater number of stylists is one of the driving purposes behind Hair Play the Tour Collective, according to Sandra Humphries, vice president of education at Kao Salon US, Goldwell and KMS California's parent company. "I wish every stylist could join us at our academies in New York or Santa Monica, CA, but that isn't reality," Humphries told me. "Classes get sold out, space is limited, and it can be diffi cult for busy stylists to make the trip and take time away from their salons. T is is a chance for us to bring a little bit of who we are and what we do out into the market. It also lets us engage with like-minded stylists—people who are passionate about their work—and have a great time celebrating our industry." T ere are lots of other educational opportunities for colorists outside of academies, as well. Affi nage, for example, just wrapped up the Affi nage Road Show, which highlighted new looks and product information from Global Ambassador Tracey Devine Smith, with stops in New Orleans, Southern California and Virginia. Many companies, such as Keune, Matrix, Organic Colour Systems and Product Club, also off er hands-on classes for colorists at a number of locations around the country.
