14 The Colorist | JULY/AUGUST 2015 | thecoloristmag.com ➜ BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA ➜ NEW YORK, NEW YORK ➜ CORALVILLE, IOWA ➜ MEDIA, PA Achieving a natural-looking fi nish is a one of the biggest challenges colorists face when working with gray hair. For gray blending, Van Gogh Salon owner Denise Mackrell uses Lakmé Gloss hair color to produce beautiful, believable multidimensional results. "It covers each gray hair 80 percent, which creates a highlighted eff ect," she says. "T is approach allows the re-growth to grow in less noticeably. Clients love it because they're getting three things in one: beautiful highlights, soft grow-out of natural color and a conditioning shine that lasts." ➜ WILMINGTON, DE Coloring textured and relaxed hair takes a high level of expertise, according Toni Garcia-Jackson, educator and owner of Bombshell Red, The Salon, who created this look using Redken Color Fusion, Blonde Icing and Shades EQ hair color. When going lighter on natural and relaxed hair, for example, Garcia-Jackson recommends opting for a high-lift color that will lift hair an extra level to lessen the prevailing red pigment on levels 1 to 5 in a permanent color formulation, eliminating the need to use a higher developer or pre-lighten. "As a general rule, use lower volume developers when permanently coloring relaxed and natural textured hair, and stay away from using lighteners on relaxed straight hair," she says. WHAT'S GOING ON IN SALONS AROUND THE COUNTRY. local color ➜ NEW YORK CITY At Salon Ziba New York, a tranquil escape from busy Manhattan, guests are treated to expert haircuts, color, styling, hair extensions, facials and nail services. Colin Christopher created this f awless blonde look—dubbed Ray of Sun Balayage—on a soft bob cut by Education Director Francois Fortin. To get the look, Christopher used L'Oréal Professionnel Platine Precision with Majicrème 40-volume developer, painting highlights of lightener on large, triangular sections of hair. "Natural- looking, buttery pastel blondes are especially right this summer, and this technique makes them look even richer and more luminous, especially in the summer sun," Christopher says. "I prefer to paint with a 2-inch paint brush with natural hair bristles from any local hardware store," Christopher says. "Although these brushes don't last as long (approximately fi ve to 10 applications), they give a softer, more natural line of demarcation at the root."
