SONNA REBECCA SAM JANET WOODY & AMY No longer are blonde services limited to double-process color or heads full of foil highlights. New techniques and shades have opened up the range of options for blonde clients. Probably the most signifi cant trend in blonding is hand-painting— carefully applied highlights that look as if the sunlight was doing your job. Cream lighteners that spread easily but stay put as you work through the hair are my go- to when I'm doing hand-painted and balayage highlights. One of my favorites is the new Matrix LightInsider Lightening System, an ammonia-free formula that features the Oil Delivery System (ODS), provides up to 6 levels of lift and can be used on or off scalp. If you're beginning to explore balayage and hand-painted highlights with your clients, here are a couple of helpful tips. Have two or three diff erent-sized brushes on hand. Use wider brushes for thick hair and for working on the lengths, and switch to a smaller brush if you're applying lightener around the hairline. You can also use one brush to apply the lightener to the mid- lengths, and then grab another dry brush to feather the color upward and downward on the strand for a natural, diff used color eff ect. When it comes to color design, several shades are trending right now. One is what I call the California blonde—a sun-kissed and bright wheat shade without a trace of warmth that can be achieved with the new Matrix Socolor Ultra.Blonde UL-IA/Intense Ash. Rose gold is also becoming hugely popular with blonde clients. To get this trendy hue, try Socolor Ultra.Blonde UL-M/Mocha.
