18 The Colorist | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2016 | thecoloristmag.com PHOTOGRAPHY: COURTESY OF SAM WONG SALON down to earth Sam Wong Salon offers the residents of the greater Washington, D.C., area luxurious, eco-friendly services in a light-f lled, historic setting. $ 130 AVERAGE PRICE OF HAIR COLOR inside story After owning a salon in New York City for 20 years, Sam Wong and Anne Warnock decided to relocate to Maryland to be closer to family, opening Sam Wong Salon in Frederick, near Baltimore and Washington, D.C., in 2006. It was the f rst organic hair salon in Frederick. "Since we were starting fresh, we decided to research products and materials that were more eco-friendly, as Sam's health was affected by many years of working with harmful chemicals," Warnock says. The salon recently took its eco- conscious approach a step further, adopting Organic Way (Oway), an exclusive line of organic, "farm-to-chair," biodynamic color, care and treatment products, for all of its services. Wong, who honed his skills working at salons in Hong Kong, London and Paris, says the key to achieving beautiful color starts with a healthy scalp and hair. "Since switching to Oway, we can offer more color options with the absence of aggressive bleach and ammonia," he says. "We do everything from single process to ombrés to color melts." 40 % OF CLIENTS GET HAIR COLOR WHERE Frederick, MD RETAIL LINES CARRIED Organic Way, John Masters Organics WHAT'S UNIQUE When renovating the light-f lled building that houses Sam Wong Salon, a 100-year-old former grain warehouse, Wong and Warnock retained as much of the original detail as possible, including the James Bates 1871 grain hoist that is the focal point of the building. "We also made every effort to select sustainable and fair trade f xtures and materials," Warnock says. refreshments ORGANIC TEA SAM WONG SALON DÉCOR bespoke simplicity top s op The salon's mission is for our clients to experience the luxury of high-end hair services while minimizing their exposure to the harsh ingredients hidden in many of today's beauty products," Warnock says.
