I
've been coloring my hair for so long that I didn't
even realize until a recent salon visit that the number
of gray strands under all of that color was starting
to multiply. "I'd say you have as much as 15–20
percent in some places," a colorist confi rmed during a
consultation when I asked her how much gray I really
had. Wow, I thought, when did that happen? I blame
it on having kids! But seriously, it happens to all of us
at some point or other. Fortunately, there are plenty
of hair color services for graying clients to choose
upf ont
from, whether they're looking for monochromatic full
coverage, gray blending, or simply to enhance their
natural silver or gray look—not to mention all of the
trend-savvy clients who are intentionally going gray
to make a fashion statement. T is issue, we cover all
aspects of working with gray—our "Gray Matters"
feature on page 38 off ers expert tips, formulas and
products for working with gray hair; Matrix's Nick
Stenson delves deeper into the topic in his column
on page 46; "Quick Fix" on page 36 features must-
have root-concealers, along with temporary color-
enhancing products; and CoCrea8's Chris Dove and
John Simpson explore the fashion of going gray
in "Silver Lining" on page 30. Regardless of which
approach to addressing gray hair your clients want
to take, it's clearly all about personal preference. As
for me, I'm not ready to embrace my gray strands
anytime soon—a big thank you to all of the professional
colorists out there who have helped me avoid acting
my age, at least for a little bit longer.
