put a new spin on the gray color
trend in their Going Gray collection,
seen exclusively in The Colorist. The
looks are meant to demonstrate how
varying shades of gray appear next
to complementary or contrasting
tones. "Going gray is a mega-trend
that isn't going anywhere for a
while," Simpson says. "This CoCre8
collection considers all aspects of
the education of gray."

After creating a cool silver-violet-white background
using a color bath technique, the duo applied a violet
direct dye around the full exterior and a soft cool
sand shade in a traditional foil. "The tonal conf ict
creates the perfect warm-meets-cool contrast with
a vintage fashion result," John Simpson says.
MASTER TIP
"If a sheer shade is desired when working with heavily
pigmented direct dyes, use a clear to dilute it,"
Christopher Dove says. "If no clear is available, use
a conditioner mixed with your direct dye."
