46 The Colorist | JULY/AUGUST 2016 | thecoloristmag.com newsfeed IN THE NICK OF TIME Matrix Artistic Director Nick Stenson shares tips, techniques and celebrity trends. THE OBVIOUS REASON to cover gray hair is to change the color to a more youthful shade of blonde, red or brunette, but there's another important aspect to our gray coverage services that I believe is every bit as important as shade shifting. As we know, gray hair also affects clients' overall hair texture and appearance, making it coarse, dry and dull. Gray coverage services can also adjust the way their hair looks, feels and behaves. ONE OF MY FAVORITE ways to soften and tame unruly gray textures is to cover gray with a nurturing, conditioning color formula, like Matrix ColorInsider High Coverage Ref ects. Another of my texture- taming strategies is to lift and highlight my gray clients' hair with ColorInsider permanent color rather than lightener whenever possible. It's possible to achieve beautiful blondes and striking highlights with these formulas, and at the same time, we can reduce the impact on the texture. IF YOUR CLIENT IS ONLY partially gray, and is happy to remain within her natural level, consider gray blending with a demi- permanent like Matrix Color Sync. These deposit-only formulas contain a Cera-Oil Priming complex that provides lasting shine while blending away gray. And while it covers, it allows your client's own highs and lows to produce a natural-looking f nish. FINALLY, DON'T overlook the importance of frequent and regular conditioning treatments for your gray clients. Leave- ins like Biolage Smoothing Shine Milk or Oil Wonders Amazonian Murumuru Controlling Oil work wonders to tame rebellious strands and leave hair shiny and pliable.
