More than 10,000 independent artists, including fashion
designers, musicians, performing artists, photographers, makeup artists and hairdressers
entered the 2012 Indie Arts Awards (RAWards), which were held in Los Angeles last December.
Only nine of them made the cut. When the dust settled, Aveda artist Heggy Gonzalez of Salt Lake
City, Utah, was named Hairstylist of the Year. Its a remarkable achievement; RAWards is the
biggest indie arts show in the world. Check out their website: rawartists.org/rawards2012.

ZOE CARPENTER
New York City. At just 26, shes well on her way to the career she imagined when
she emailed Minardi on a whim ve years ago. I have no idea why she answered
my email. She must get hundreds every week, says Carpenter, who, when pressed,
suggests that Minardi might have sensed that the two were kindred spirits. Like
Minardi, Carpenter is passionate about color. Two weeks later, Carpenter was in
Manhattan working at Minardis salon where her education began in earnest. My
career skyrocketed working with Mark Mileti and the rest of her team, she says. So
where does Carpenter see herself in ve years? I see myself with a busy book,
going in and doing what I love every day and hopefully traveling the country spreading
the word about what I learned from Beth.
