18 The Colorist | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014 | thecoloristmag.com hair he goes Darnell Wold has become the go-to guy for custom-made wigs in a variety of vibrant shades, and he owes it all to social media. PHOTOGRAPHY: DARNELL WOLD; NEYEONA (2); JAZMINAD icons A fter graduating with honors from the Aveda Institute in New York City more than 10 years ago, Darnell Wold began taking advanced training with industry heavyweights like Ted Gibson, Ruth Roche and Nick Arrojo. T ose courses paid off , helping him hone his skills in cutting, coloring and styling. After a stint as a multicultural hairstylist with Aveda, Wold struck out on his own as a freelance artist, quickly making his mark in the editorial and fashion worlds. Out of what he describes as "sheer boredom," Wold began experimenting with wig making about a year and a half ago. "It took me three days to make my fi rst wig," he says. T e next step was to apply his prodigious hair coloring skills to the project. "Ombré was just becoming popular so I decided to make a gorgeous ombré wig." What happened next was a surprise to Wold, though perhaps it's not so surprising given what we know about the power of social media. "When I uploaded the picture to Instagram, people from all over the world contacted me to fi nd out if they could buy that wig." Today Wold's Instagram account has 130,000 followers, and he's been asked to create wigs for celebrities like Kat Von D and singer- songwriter Ariane Grande. To create the intense ombrés and fashion colors that have become his stock-in-trade, Wold relies heavily on Pravana Vivids, though he also uses Manic Panic, Joico and Aveda. Last summer he opened his own private studio in Park Slope, Brooklyn. "T at was a huge accomplishment for me, and it only happened because of the success I've had making these custom-color wigs," says Wold, who uses on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to build his business. "I would never have had these awesome opportunities and contacts if it weren't for social media."
