42 The Colorist | MARCH/APRIL 2016 | Convert male haircut clients into color clients with these specialized services. workplace PHOTOGRAPHY (CLOCKWISE FROM TOP): GILAXIA; COURTESY OF MANUFACTURERS (4) man power W hen female clients start showing signs of going gray, most stylists wouldn't think twice about suggesting hair color services, but they often neglect talking to male clients about it, assuming they'll be more resistant to the idea. "Men are typically afraid of big changes," says David Stanko, Redken master colorist and senior colorist at Cutler Salon in New York City. "T ey don't want to come to work on Monday and look diff erent on T ursday." T is doesn't mean, however, that men aren't interested in looking a little younger, Stanko says; stylists just need to take the time to thoroughly explain the color process and results. "To start, try asking a few easy questions like, 'Do you want to take a few years off by adding more pepper to your salt-and-pepper hair?' or 'Are you interested in taking a few minutes to reduce some gray?'" Stanko says. Most important, he stresses, assure them that their color will look subtle and discreet. "Let him know that you don't plan to take him from a newscasterlike gray to all-over gray coverage à la Vegas magician," he says. Here are four color services that are ideal for male clients. Utilizing permanent dye technology but providing commitment-free demi- permanent results, Redken for Men Color Camo is an ammonia-free formula that offers low-maintenance gray reduction with no visible lift in 10 minutes. For easy shade selection, the line is available in light (levels 7–10), medium (levels 4–6) and dark (levels 1–3) ranges in two tones—Ash (smoky) and Natural (cool gold). ➜ 1 2 3 4 Delivering transparent gray-blending in a cool, masculine tone in a matter of minutes, Goldwell Men ReShade utilizes hybrid foam technology that enables the natural-looking results of an oxidative color technology with easy foam application that can be done discreetly at the shampoo bowl. Perfect for color-shy male clients who don't want a solid color effect, Men ReShade is formulated to shampoo out true to tone in about six weeks with no visible re-growth or reddish, warm tones after shampooing. The line consists of four Gray Blending Shots in cool ash tones, Developer Concentrate and an applicator bottle. ➜ Flash Back from Paul Mitchell is a demi-permanent color line formulated specif cally for men to conceal gray and white strands for four to six weeks in just 10 minutes. The conditioning, ammonia-free formula contains soy protein to hydrate and boost hair's strength, while UV absorbers help prevent color fade. Flash Back is available in cool, neutral and subtly warm tones in dark, medium and light shades that offer subtle sheen for natural-looking results, and the liquid-gel consistency enables quick and easy bottle application. ➜ For clients—both male and female— who would rather enhance their natural silver tones than cover them, Schwarzkopf has just introduced Igora Royal Absolutes SilverWhite, formulated with a siliamine and collagen complex to fortify the hair, restoring its youthful appearance. The line's four shades—Silver, Dove Grey, Slate Grey and Grey Lilac— provide a transparent effect that lasts up to 25 washes and grows out virtually seamlessly at the hairline. Schwarzkopf offers two services to meet clients' differing needs, taking either 10 or 20 minutes. ➜ REDKEN FOR MEN Color Camo PAUL MITCHELL Flash Back SCHWARZKOPF Igora Royal Absolutes SilverWhite GOLDWELL Men ReShade
