Urban Betty AUSTIN, TEXAS Betty "Chelle" Neff opened Urban Betty in Austin, Texas, in 2005 with only one employee and six chairs, managing every aspect of business from reception to styling clients to marketing. Over the years, her salon grew so busy that last year she expanded the space to accommodate 24 chairs, making it one of the largest independent salons in Austin. At this point, Neff also realized her former index card system of tracking clients wasn't adequate to meet the salon's needs, so she launched her own mobile app. T e free FyleStyle app, available for iOS 7.0 and later, allows hairstylists at any salon to keep track of client visits, color formulas, pricing, and before and after photos on their mobile devices. Says Neff , "Hairstyling is a highly personalized experience, and having this tool to store information about our clients helps stylists stay organized and able to deliver the best salon service to their customers." Fuse Salon and Spa FRANKFORT, IL L'Anza Global Healing Color Director Leah Freeman recently relocated her salon, Fuse Salon and Spa, to historic Frankfort, IL, located 45 minutes south of Chicago. The two-story, 2,400-square-foot L'Anza Healing Center was built from the ground up featuring 10 stations outf tted with luxurious dark bamboo Belvedere chairs and Craftsman toolboxes, all moveable to accommodate L'Anza education sessions. At the color-processing table—specialties include balayage, ombré and corrective color— guests can access social media sites, peruse a variety of digital magazines, view Fuse's look book or make their next appointment on the salon's iPads. The most important thing Freeman has learned the second time around designing a salon? "No square footage should be wasted," she says. "Every square foot of our property makes us money."
