THREE CELEBRITY COLORISTS GET PERSONAL, SHARING THEIR BIG BREAKS, GO-TO PRODUCTS, FAVORITE BEHIND-THE- SCENES MOMENTS and more. show MY BIG BREAK GO-TO HAIR COLOR PRODUCT My fi rst big-deal celebrity job was key hairstylist on a fi lm titled Stiletto (2008), as the personal hairstylist to Tom Berenger. I had a huge crush on him in the '80s, and I was so nervous. I had to bleach his hair white and tone it—not easy because he was coloring it himself. I returned him to brunette when we wrapped and he was featured on the cover of Cigar Afi cionado. With hand- painting being so popular, my favorite must- have product right now is Joico FreePlay Clay Lightener. I worked a lot with Heather Graham and Carolyn Murphy when I started out. IMG was always sending me their biggest models to do makeovers. These makeovers led to press that helped new clients who needed makeovers fi nd me. 3 marie robinson PHOTOGRAPHY (TOP TO BOTTOM): COURTESY OF CHERRY PETENBRINK; COURTESY OF DEAN ROYBAL; COURTESY OF MARIE ROBINSON My fi rst big break as a celebrity colorist became a reality for me when my clients got their fi rst big breaks! There is a special bond that we create together over time. These bonds lead to trust, and that helped to open the door for other opportunities. 2 dean Roybal I love hair bleach. You can't make most hair color changes without it. cherry petenbrink 1 THE HOLLYWOOD ISSUE ★ Wella Color Touch demi-permanent hair color. It allows me to change color level and tone or fi ll quickly and easily while leaving the hair with great shine and condition. I cut my sister's natural curly hair while wet. It shrank so short she swore I'd never touch her hair again. But I did her hair for her wedding two years later and still do it when I visit her. WORST ROOKIE MISTAKE My worst rookie hair color mistake happened when I thought I could get away without properly fi lling the hair when going darker. When my client got in front of the heavy lighting and the HD camera technology it exposed everything, including the unfi lled, hollow- looking hair—lesson learned! Luckily I haven't made many mistakes, but I did learn a lot by accidentally turning gray blue. Because I always loved to paint, I realized I should apply my skill as a painter using the color wheel to change her hair back to neutral. joico freePlay clay lightener
