Her most-requested color services? Balayage and blonding. "When creating blondes, toning is my secret," Doss says. "Make sure you formulate light enough to allow the toner to sit on for the full processing time. The clients' at-home care is also important for the longevity of the color service." Cut Loose Hair Design VANCOUVER, WA @ b e e s a m b e aut y After clocking many hours directing hair and makeup for fashion shows in the Pacifi c Northwest over the years, Bee Sam, founder of Bee Sam Beauty, which operates inside Cut Loose Hair Design salon, decided her work deserved its own spotlight. With the help of photographer Amy Garza and her husband, Sam started bringing her vision to life by organizing and directing shoots of her hair models in downtown Vancouver, WA. Seen here is her model Miranda Dowler, whose look Sam created using the "layage" technique, which entails hand-painting lightener on the hair while the client is laying on her back with her hair fanned out. "Fast-forward to the present—our shoots attract all kinds of interest from models, photographers and fashion designers who like the idea of hair taking precedence in a shoot," Sam says. "It's a fascinating concept for them to explore with the end result challenging the norms of traditional fashion photography." | JULY/AUGUST 2017 | The Colorist 19 Shannon Kezy, a rising star at Navii Salon Spa in Schererville, IN, was recently awarded the 2017 Margaret Vinci Heldt Creativity in Hairdressing Scholarship by Cosmetologists Chicago to advance her education and enhance her career. Thanks to the scholarship, Kezy, who specializes in blondes and color correction in addition to cutting, was able to attend a fi ve-day course at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Chicago. "I was so honored to be awarded the Margaret Vinci Heldt Scholarship from Cosmetologists Chicago," Kezy says. "She was such an inspiration to the industry and created an iconic hairstyle, the beehive, that has been done and will be redone for decades. Her passion, creativity and perseverance are things I can only hope to live up to."
