When they made the decision to open a salon in Indianapolis, they bought a bungalow with a storied history in midtown not far from their salon. "We were told that one of the brothers who started Ball Corporation, the company that makes glass caning jars, bought this house for his mistress in the 1920s," says Abdool, who has gone to great lengths to create an urban sanctuary in his backyard where he and Cooper can unwind. "I love exotic places, and I love the weather in Southern California, so I've tried to replicate what a house in some warm, exotic locale might look like," says Abdool, who installed a fountain in the backyard surrounded by lush vegetation. "I like to think of it as our own private Fantasy Island. It's a place where Emmett and I can go to detox after a busy day at the salon." A self-professed spiritual seeker, Abdool has created a similar space in a small garden behind the salon where several statues of Buddha are on display. At the house is an enormous Buddha that used to be on the campus at Butler University in Indianapolis. "I took it when they were giving it away," he says. Supermodel Elaine Irwin, who was married to singer John Mellencamp, is a longtime client. In 2010 she took Abdool and Cooper to meet the Dali Lama when he came to Bloomington. "He blessed a set of sandalwood mala beads I took with me," Abdool says. "T ey are among my most prized possessions." 1One of the many Buddhas Naieem Abdool collects 2Abdool loves spending time tending to his garden. 3Gianni Versace gave this hair clip to supermodel Elaine Irwin, who gave it to Abdool. 4A fountain takes center stage on the patio. 1234 thecoloristmag.com | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012 | The Colorist 31 { PHOTOGRAPHY: GILBERT KING; VERSACE HAIR CLIP: DOUGLAS MICHAEL {
