› HOW CHAD DEMCHUK CAME OUT OF NOWHERE TO BECOME NAHA'S 2012 HAIR COLORIST OF THE YEAR
fi nal cut ‹
The competition was fi erce in the hair color category at the North American Hairstyling Awards last July. Finalists included heavyweights like Goldwell's Dimitrios Tsioumas, Matrix and JC Penney's Nick Stenson and Joico's Sue Pemberton. Ultimately newcomer Chad Demchuk of Amelia Paris Salon in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, took home the top honors. "The whole experience of competing in NAHA was very surreal for me," says the Joico guest artist. "I was fl abbergasted that I even got nominated. And then to win, well, I was fl oored." Demchuk admits that if it hadn't been for a contest Joico sponsored for its guest artists, he would probably not have entered NAHA for another fi ve or six years. As it turned out, he and 14 other guest artists were asked to submit before-and-after shots to Joico for consideration. Demchuk took fi rst place. The prize? A trip to Los Angeles to do a photo shoot with International Artistic Director Damien Carney, who took the photos that were ultimately submitted to NAHA. The rest, as they say, is history.
