backstory ➜ Hair Heroes, which was sam I am ➜ Sam Lapin was known as "the father of hair coloring" and for good reason. He became a hairdresser during the Depression when there were only about fi ve colorists in all of Los Angeles. "T ey were frightened to death to dye hair because it was so diffi cult," Sam told Bumble and bumble founder Michael Gordon, who interviewed the legendary colorist for his book, Hair Heroes, published in 2002. In 1946, the Lapin brothers—Al, Ivor, Harold and Sam— opened Lapin Salon of Beauty on Sunset Boulevard, catering to a clientele that included aspiring actresses and showgirls. It was only a matter of time before they began experimenting with color formulations, attempting to create blonde dyes that would provide diff erent tones, not just "peroxide yellow." As Sam explained, there were very few progressive dyes on the market at the time, but the brothers were determined to change all that. After much trial and error, they developed the fi rst controlled color, which they marketed as Lapinal. In 1970, it became Lapinal/ Redken. One of Sam's clients was actress Shelley Winters, who brought a young starlet into the salon one day so Sam could turn her into a blonde. Her name? Marilyn Monroe. In 1996 NAHA inducted Sam, who worked into his eighties, into the Hall of Leaders, which seems like a fi tting tribute to a man who revolutionized the industry. 52 The Colorist | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012 | thecoloristmag.com published in 2002, was written by Bumble and bumble founder Michael Gordon as a tribute to the hairdressers who touched and inspired him.
