At frst he merely added a few highlights, but when he listened to her second album, Boys Dont Cry, he felt like she was entering a different phase in her life. These songs were lighter, says Johns, who suggested that she make her hair lighter too. Rumer agreed, and Johns went to work, using Clairol 42D (Medium Cool Blonde) to lighten her base. I chose that shade because its one of their coolest colors, says Johns, who foiled in Clairol Basic White Lightener around the front and top. Its a different look for Johns, who tends to go for the gold, but in this ONE TOhas been on our radar for some time. Armed with a couple of recommendations from people shed met while at Wella, McGowen ew to New York City to interview for a position at Arrojos salon there. He hired me on the spot, says McGowen, who relocated to Manhattan from the West Coast where she was born and raised. After three years, she felt it was time to leave. New York never felt like home to me, and I missed my family, says McGowen, who got a job at Planet Salon where shes been under the tutelage of owner Ginger Boyle. McGowens ve-year plan? To work for Wella and become a top stylist. Now that shes made the technical team for Illumina, the companys biggest color innovation in 20 years, its safe to say that shes well on her way.
